Case Studies
Case Study 1: The London Eye
The London Eye is a giant 135-metre (443 ft) tall Ferris wheel situated on the banks of the River Thames, in London, England.
It is the tallest Ferris wheel in Europe, and the most popular paid tourist attraction in the United Kingdom, visited by over 3.5 million people annually. It is still described by its operators as "the world's tallest cantilevered observation wheel"
The London Eye is located at the western end of Jubilee Gardens, on the South Bank of the River Thames, in the London Borough of Lambeth, between Westminster Bridge and Hungerford Bridge. The site is adjacent to that of the former Dome of Discovery, which was built for the Festival of Britain in 1951.
The Business Challenge:
Concerned with safety the owners of the London Eye were prompted to act when Fathers4Justice were climbing famous landmarks to protest, putting themselves and others at risk. As one of London's most iconic landmarks it was essential that the ladders used on the Eye for maintenance and escape were secured. This brought with it several unique challenges due to the construction and size of the Eye.
The Solution:
Garmendale's consulting engineers developed a solution, manufacturing a bespoke collapsible ladder that locked up in such a way that it removed all footholds and provided zero access to even the most determined protestor. GELs team, had to call on all of their many years experience to overcome some unique challenges presented by the Eye in terms of physical space fixing and fabricating this unique solution.

Case Study 2: TRADEBE Hazardous Waste Management and Treatment
TRADEBE is a multi-national business and one of the largest specialist waste management treatment companies in the UK.
They specialise in offering quality innovative environmental services that contribute to sustainable development and provide value to our customers, shareholders and personnel.
The Business Challenge:
The challenge presented to Garmendale was how to remove hydrocarbons from crude oil to allow the solid waste to be safely sent to a land fill site.
The Solution:
Garmendale's consulting engineers assessed the requirement with the client and designed a bespoke solution utilising the many years experience of its design team. The solution was to manufacture a bespoke machine to separate the hydrocarbons using a unique vibrating table that separated the solid waste using immense heat. The project faced some serious health and safety issues and involved several engineering challenges including mechanical, electrical and hydraulic engineering principles.
GEL Manufacturing Dreams:
